Legacy Giving With a Global Impact
Andrea Zavala ’21 volunteered at primary schools across east Africa last year, helping students learn about static electricity, practice their binary numbers through card games and build circuits using lemons. This international experience, which has fostered Zavala’s growth as a dedicated global citizen, was made possible thanks to the Ben Huppe ’14 Memorial Internships for a Sustainable World.
Created by Bob Huppe and Maggie Lewis to honor their son who died in a car accident in 2012, the internships provide student stipends for work in renewable energy, green technologies and environmental sustainability, or for work to help solve the problems of underserved populations.
“Ben really connected with Harvey Mudd. He was so excited by his internship and volunteer work, so alive and engaged in the work of the world,” says Bob.
Ben’s accomplishments included the co-presidency of the Class of 2014. In high school, Ben organized trips to developing countries and helped set up computer labs in Guatemala, Ecuador, India and Chile.
Bob and Maggie turned Ben’s passions into a lasting legacy at Harvey Mudd College that now provides multiple students with opportunities to make a global impact.
The Huppes learned how to complement their current philanthropy—which includes gifts from a retirement account—by making a planned gift to the College. The couple has included HMC in their estate plans with a bequest that will provide additional funds to the endowment in their son’s name. Through their planned gift, they can maximize their contributions to ultimately support even more students.
“The students are amazing,” says Maggie. “We always learn something from them and it makes us hopeful for the world.”
