Garrows Honor Family With Legacy Gifts to HMC

Beth and Tom Garrow

Beth and Tom Garrow

Proud grandparents Beth and Tom Garrow are two of the most likeable people you’ll meet. They love to travel to see family and to explore international destinations. Their hobbies include pickleball, golf and bodysurfing.

The couple met at Earlham College, and Tom proposed on their fourth date. Shortly after, the two headed to the University of Wisconsin before moving to Southern California and pursuing careers and additional graduate degrees.

A daughter of Joe and Jean Platt, Harvey Mudd College’s founding president and first lady, Beth grew up on campus, experiencing firsthand its early growth. Beth considers the College part of her extended family. It’s among the reasons why she and Tom make annual gifts to support scholarships and why they decided to include HMC in their estate plans.

“I feel I have a unique perspective as to the impact HMC has made nationally and globally in over close to seven decades,” Beth said. “I watched my parents with so many others—past and present—build not only a highly respected academic institution, but one that instilled the importance of using their talents to find avenues to make the world a better place.”

Beth has included Harvey Mudd College as a beneficiary of her retirement accounts, and the couple has included a bequest in their estate plans. Their gifts will support two established endowed scholarships in Beth’s parents’ names and her maternal grandparents’ names.

“I always enjoy hearing from these scholarship recipients about what their interests and aspirations are. Leaving a gift from our estate to further grow these endowments will support students into the future and provide an opportunity to honor my family.”

The legacy of the Platt family at Harvey Mudd College can be seen throughout the years, and their HMC extended family will continue to benefit from their ingenuity and generosity for years to come.
